Some of you out there will be settling into your first seasons of Football Manager Live or eagerly waiting to sign in to your new game world. Many of you might be thinking though what skills do I need? Where should I specialise? What can I do with the skills I get?
There are many routes to go down, but as co-author of Tactical Theorems and Frameworks, perhaps I ought to give my view on the tactics skills. Of course, you may choose to ignore tactics altogether. But if like me youre a bit of a geek when it comes to fiddling with sliders, heres a quick start guide to fast tracking yourself to TT&F glory in Football Manager Live.
Each of these skills is listed in order of priority. You certainly dont have to go for them in this order, but I think from my own experience of creating tactics in FM09 this is the route you will need to go down in order to get the most important aspects of TT&F together. Each skill is listed with a minimum requirement to make the basic TT&F Default tactics which are available for download for Football Manager 2009. Then I give a recommended level at which I think you should be aiming short to mid-term in order to give yourself tactical flexibility. If you want more than the recommended, it may be best to achieve the recommended level and then go after another skill you can then return to upgrade the extra skills at a later time. And finally Ive outlined a maximum range which I think is the most you will ever realistically need. Going for more may actually be a waste of valuable time which you could be using elsewhere
Recently, Americans have made their voices heard by electing an historically significant president on the platform of change. While being a much more trivial matter in comparison, Sports Interactive have also spent this past year developing the newest edition of Football Manager with the same ideologies in mind. An oft-heard criticism of FM08 was that it wasnt a dramatic leap from the functionality and playability of FM07. Which is valid in many ways, and with the cult-like fanaticism of the FM community for the most innovative features year after year, SI Towers had an uphill climb to top themselves once again. The unprecedented inclusion of a 3D match engine view (with 2D TV mode) as well as increased media interaction, an over-hauled transfer system, updated league & nationality modules and a plethora of appreciated small bells & whistles, it is without question a much greater gap than we experienced this time last year. Was the FM community really ready for this change that they so clamoured for last edition?
One of the great pleasures of developing Football Manager, and CM before it, over the years has been the role of the community in helping us develop and shape the game. This guide is one of the best examples of how a community can enhance a game and add to the experience of those playing it.
The tactical interface and system in Football Manager 2009 has prompted much discussion and debate over the years, and I have been following the theorems contained herein since they first appeared back in 2005. Now while I know the match engine code pretty well, and understand in coding terms how things translate from tactics to match, I have to admit that some of the things I have read here have opened my eyes to the way the match works in the eyes of the user, as well as inspiring me to make things work even better.
So I have pleasure in personally recommending this guide for both new and experienced FM players, and hope you get as much from it in terms of game play, not to mention on field success, as those who spent time creating it.
