Choosing a team to manage
Average Rating: 7/10 Hits: 4217 Submitted: Nov 6, 2007
If you're struggling to choose a team to manage, then this is the place to look. It'll give you all the hints and tips you'll need to decide exactly which team you'd like to manage in Football Manager 2008.
The right team for the right manager
So many people know what team is for them but do they?
This is my second article ever and in this article I hope to help you discover your perfect club. I have to say some people have made articles like this but this is my version
I believe these are the main types of managers:
Glory Hunter
Standing loyal to your team you support
Wanting Promotion
Wanting to battle relegation
Glory hunter
Well I believe this would be for the less amount of people because people just don't want to have easy games. But some people who have just had a bad game may want some motivation so these are the teams you can go for:
Manchester Utd, You should win easy with this teams at least one cup but have the potential for the League Cup, Fa Cup, Premier League and the European Champions League. You don't need to go in there and make any signings or do to much.
Chelsea, This may be a little harder than Manchester Utd as there may be pressure if you do badly, but this ,may be able to be fixed with the chairmans money.
Barcelona, With this team you can win many competitions. However pressure may come from Real Madrid and Valencia.
Real Madrid, Same as the above.
Valencia, Same as the above.
AC Milan, Mabye the least chance of winning in Europe but they have a very good chance of winning domestic competitions.
Best team to be if you want to be a Glory Hunter: Manchester Utd They have the most chance of winning competitions.
Standing loyal to your club you support
Easy enough pick the team you support easy enough.
Wanting Promotion
I have decided to select the Championship to get the teams from for this one. Myself have done this and it is very fun and you get very nervous depending on how long you get to the end of the season without being promoted.
Ipswich Town, This team have been pushing for promotion and on FM you can make that dream come true. However you need to be ready to have a very small budget and not being able to attract good players.
Watford, This team will have a very large budget and will have a very large chance of being up there for the whole season.
West Brom, Same as above apart from the fact they may have a smaller budget and players will be more willing to go to Watford rather than West Brom.
I know there are other teams that have a chance but these are the best for wanting promotion in a good way.
The best team to be for promotion. If you want a chance to just be there the whole time go for Watford, but if you want a very nervous end go for Ipswich.
Wanting to battle relegation
I have choosen the Premiership for this one.
Derby, This will be the hardest but mabye if you don't get relegated the satisfaction will be more than just another club which will be easy, however good Premier League players will not want to come to the club they will go to bigger clubs.
Sunderland, The most easy one as there will be a large transfer kitty but many players will still not want to join the club.
The best team to be would be Derby as they are a bigger challenge, Sunderland would be to easy and would fall under a mild form of Glory Hunter.
You have the new copy of Football manager already installed and now it is time to load it up and make the big choice Who Do I Be, You browse the leagues available thinking carefully about what you want from the game and I guarantee you avoid what can be classed as the less well enjoyable leagues.
You think to yourself How can I choose the perfect team so I suggest head over to your Favourite FM Forum and see what Challenges it has running this is a good way to make your choice but I will say I am sure you will always find a challenge that is focused around one of the big nations if not one of the bigger teams.
So u look at some other custom Database challenges or the favourite unemployed challenge. You still cant make a choice so you ask other forum members who will give their thoughts and some will offer you the choice of Yes you guessed it the lesser enjoyable teams and once again you over look that choice, so in the end you pick one of the Higher ranked teams in a top division and you begin to rub your hands in joy as you plan how to spend Romans Dirty Cash or some Italian Mafia funded money and you goes threw the first few months spending big and hitting 5 past the newly promoted side and you make your way up the league table dominating the proceedings as you go and now I pose you the question Is This enjoyable are you getting maximum fun from your FM game.
I suggest go for it pick one of the lesser know country's to play a game in, I hear you once again say but I don't know the players or I don't understand how the league works or maybe even they have strange rules around things such as Limited Foreign players or your squad must have at least 4 home grown players. But does this not add to the enjoyment I know I would rather bring home some glory for a lower ranked team than win the League by a land slide with Chelsea after buying the worlds best players even my 5 year old son can manage that.
I can honestly tell you that my most enjoyable game to date has to be my time spent playing in the MLS and I agree when I first loaded it up I thought what am I letting my self into they having funny transfer rules so how can I enjoy what I don't understand. In principal this is true but I say give it ago, there can be a great sense of excitement when it comes to making you final choice for your squad and Yes you may loose a big name star because you cant fit him in around the salary cap but hey don't this make it a challenge. I have been told by people MLS is a one season league but I would say is it not half the challenge actually getting past season one with any team.
Another factor that may put you off of picking a lesser known team is I cant attract huge stars to play for me, so don't try to sign Wayne Rooney and expect him to come to the Polish First League to play for Wisla because he wont, I suggest develop youth they can be very useful and you may make the next Polish Wayne Rooney and sell him for Millions and I can assure you that would be very satisfying.
Also another stumbling block maybe the less transfer funds you receive which will mean you can't compete financially with big boys but a good cup run will help you make money and a wise hand in the transfer market will see money start coming in.
So I will challenge anyone that by going to nation that you may not have explored before will be fun and testing and maybe sometimes you feel like turning it off but don't just settle down and get ready for a wild ride as Yes there will be ups and downs and maybe a few tears but remember you will get a warm feeling by knocking out one of the big boys out of Europe.
You may come out of it thinking Yes I enjoyed that or you may still plum for the big boys but at least you can say I gave it a Shot, so Remember next time you load up FM looking for a new challenging game load up something you have never done before and see if you get more enjoyment.
Heres a nice article from 1pswich describing the task of taking up a new post when you first start your game, and the possible choices that you face.
What Job Should I Take
Ok so your wondering what club you should manage well here's the complete lowdown on what to do.
- Difficulty Rating's
Easy: A novice could do this but if you have just had a bad game this is the one for you.
Medium: This is for someone who wants a little bit of a challenge but not wanting to go for it completely.
Hard: This is for someone who has played FM for a long time and if you are wanting a challenge which will test you to the limits.
Impossible: Someone is going to turn around and say it's not but I think only a complete mastermind (or someone with a cheat book) to complete if you can complete this you should be on TV.
The league held its first season in 1992/93 and was originally composed of 22 clubs. The first ever Premiership goal was scored by Brian Deane of Sheffield United in a 2-1 win against Manchester United. Due to insistence by FIFA, the international governing body of football, that domestic leagues reduce the number of games clubs played, the number of clubs was reduced to 20 in 1995 when four teams were relegated from the league and only two teams were promoted. On 8 June 2006, FIFA requested that all major European leagues, including Italy's Serie A and Spain's La Liga be reduced to 18 teams by the start of the 2007/08 season. The Premier League responded by announcing their intention to resist such a reduction. Ultimately the 2007/08 season kicked off again with 20 teams.
The league changed its name from the 'FA Premier League' to simply the 'Premier League' on February 12, 2007.
- Premiership
Easy challenge: To take Manchester Utd to win the Premier league for the second time in a row.
Medium hardness challenge: To get the following teams into Europe:
Bolton, Newcastle, Manchester City
Hard challenge: Keep Derby from being relegated. Possibly one of the hardest challenge's on FM 2008 but someone with great skill could do this.
Impossible challenge: Make Derby win the Premier league, Ok so I have called this impossible so if you can do this you are the master at FM.
- Championship challenges
Easy challenge: To take the following teams to promotion, Watford, Charlton, Sheffield United or West Brom. For a challenge in the middle between Easy and medium do this one:
Become champions with West Brom.
Medium challenge:
1. Survive relegation with Bristol City or Scunthorpe
2. Get into the play-offs with either Ipswich or Hull
Hard Challenge
Win promotion with Blackpool in one season.
Impossible challenge
Become champions with Bristol City
Extras
For the easy challenge do it without buying any new player's
For the medium challenge do it with only getting loan player's from the championship and not buying anyone from the Premier league.
For the hard challenge do it by finishing in the automatic promotion places
For the Impossible challenge just being able to do it will be hard enough I wont add any more things to that one.
Championship teams:
Barnsley
Blackpool
Bristol City
Burnley
Cardiff City
Charlton Athletic
Colchester United
Coventry City
Crystal Palace
Hull City
Ipswich Town
Leicester City
Norwich City
Plymouth Argyle
Preston North End
Queens Park Rangers
Scunthorpe United
Sheffield United
Sheffield Wednesday
Southampton
Stoke City
Watford
West Bromwich Albion
Wolverhampton Wanderers
- La Liga
Easy Challenge: Win the league with Barcelona or Real Madrid, This challenge should be quite easy because they have very good teams after the summer transfer window to progress this challenge to a medium look at the extras at the bottom of the page.
Medium Challenge: Save the following clubs from relegation Levante or Gretafe, These clubs are odds on to be relegated and in real life they aren't doing to well but with a few good deals you could save them from an obvious relegation.
Hard Challenge: Win the league with Espanyol, This club enjoys coming around mid table or sometimes in the bottom half but with some very good transfers and a experienced manager behind them they could do it.
Impossible challenge: Win the league with Gretafe or Levante ok so you are going to need to be amazing manager but I believe it is impossible
Extras
For the easy challenge do it without buying any new players
For the medium challenge do it with only getting loan players from any other countries and not buying anyone from the La Liga.
For the hard challenge do it by finishing 5 points clear at the top above the second place team.
For the Impossible challenge just being able to do it will be hard enough I wont add any more things to that one.
- SPL
These challenges were quite hard to think up because the SPL is so unpredictable, take Hearts for example but I managed to get some so here we go.
Easy challenge: Win the league with Celtic, this must be the easiest challenge out of all of them, this is for a complete novice player who has never played any manager games before.
Medium challenge: Finish in the top two with Hearts, Right so you have to come above Rangers or Celtic this is quite hard but with some good signings. I suggest you need to get some good goalkeeper to replace Craig Gordon who went to Sunderland.
Hard challenge: Win the league with Motherwell, I didn't know where to put this one at first I put this in impossible but changed my mind, I thought with some amazing signings and some good tactics and training this could be possible.
Impossible challenge: Win the league with Gretna, So this I doubt can be done this is only for somebody who has played for years and with lots of good knowledge of the game and the SPL and well everything.
Extras
For the easy challenge do it without buying any new players
For the medium challenge do it with only getting loan players from any other countries and not buying anyone from the SPL
For the hard challenge do it by finishing 5 points clear at the top above the second place team.
For the Impossible challenge just being able to do it will be hard enough I wont add any more things to that one.
- Countries
Easy challenge: Win the World Cup with Brazil, France or Italy these should be easy enough you have lots of good players to choose from so this one is for a novice or for someone managing a club team. as you don't want to be messing around with lots of scouting.
Medium challenge: Get into the World Cup with Scotland, If they would not of had such the good form in there recent matches (I guess this will be included in 08) this would be hard but this could be quite easy, I would only try this challenge if you are only managing a country.
Hard challenge: Win the World Cup twice with England, Ok so this can be done but it will take determination to carry on with bad results for at least 8 years more than likely more than that. Have a go and you will get on the hall of fame.
Impossible challenge: Win the World Cup with Scotland within 10 years, even with their great form this is impossible but if you do it you will be a FM mastermind
I cannot really put any extras on here.
- Ligue 1
So the French league now, enjoy.
Ligue 1 (Première division or Division 1 until 2003, now called Ligue 1 Orange) is the top division of French and Monegasque football, one of two divisions making up the LFP, the other being Ligue 2. It has been an all-professional league since its inception in 1932 except for the 1943/44 season
Easy challenge: Win the league with Lyon easy enough like the previous easy one's mabye a little bit more difficult because of the class of the other teams.
Medium challenge: Win the French legaue cup with Le Mans and finish in the top half of Ligue 1, they were semi- finalists last year so they have the chance to win it.
Hard challenge: Win the Champions league and the Ligue 1 with Monaco, a very good team but not had the best of luck over the past few years.
Impossible challenge: Win the league with Metz, like it says on the tin impossible.
Teams in Ligue 1:
Auxerre
Bordeaux
Caen
Le Mans
Lens
Lille
Lorient
Lyon
Marseille
Metz
Monaco
Nancy
Nice
Paris Saint-Germain
Rennes
Saint-Étienne
Sochaux
Strasbourg
Toulouse
Valenciennes
Other teams that you can use for the medium challenge are bold and one's for the impossible are underlined
Extras
For the easy challenge do it without buying any new players
For the medium challenge do it with only getting loan players from any other countries and not buying anyone from the Ligue 1
For the hard challenge do it by finishing 5 points clear at the top above the second place team.
For the Impossible challenge just being able to do it will be hard enough I wont add any more things to that one.
- The Irn-Bru Scottish Football League
The Irn-Bru Scottish Football League First Division Championship is the highest division of the Scottish Football League and the second highest in the Scottish football league system.
The division contains ten teams and each year the top team is promoted to the Scottish Premier League, subject to meeting the stadium criteria. The bottom club is automatically relegated and the second bottom club goes to an end of season play-off with the second, third and fourth placed clubs from Division Two.
Clyde F.C.
Dundee F.C.
Dunfermline Athletic F.C.
Greenock Morton F.C.
Hamilton Academical F.C.
Livingston F.C.
Partick Thistle F.C.
Queen of the South F.C.
Stirling Albion F.C.
St Johnstone F.C.
Easy challenge: Get promoted with the following clubs St Johnstone
Dunfermline. This challenge may be a little harder as there is some talent in the First division but someone who is quite new to the game should be able to master this one.
Medium challenge: Survive with Stirling, this one is for the ones who know a lot about the Scottish leagues being able to get a few good signings in and being able to apply the right tactics to their style of play but it can be done by someone who has been playing for a while if they focus in the places that need focussing on.
Hard challenge: Win the league with Clyde, same as before really someone who knows the league well this one will be for you.
Impossible challenge: Win the league with Stirling, now this one will be for someone with a huge know how about football in Scotland but I believe it cannot be done go on prove me wrong.
Extras
For the easy challenge do it without buying any new players
For the medium challenge do it with only getting loan players from any other countries and not buying anyone from the First division
For the hard challenge do it by finishing 5 points clear at the top above the second place team.
For the Impossible challenge just being able to do it will be hard enough I wont add any more things to that one.
- League 1
Football League One (often referred to as League One for short or Coca-Cola Football League 1 for sponsorship reasons) is the second-highest division of The Football League and third-highest division overall in the English football league system. It is the most profitable and competitive third-tier football league in the world.
Football League One was introduced for the 2004/2005 season. It was previously known as the Football League Second Division.
Challenges:
Easy challenge: Win the league with Southend, after their dissapointing exit from the Championship they are in desperte need of re-entering the the league they want to be in. This should be quite an easy challenge for many but mabye a first timer may strugge with this so I would say if you are a novice go for a challenge in the offer leagues. Someone who has played can just take over and may need to sign a few players and will need the basic know of League 1
Medium challenge: Finish in the play offs with Leeds, Normally this would be an extra easy challenge but with their point deduction it makes it a little bit more difficult because it will be hard to attract new and good players. But it can be done with some ease so if you have played a little this one is for you.
Hard challenge: Win the league with Leeds, you might be thinking shouldn't this be impossible well no because Leeds do have a lot of money and good players but then of course you do have the point deduction you will need to know a lot about the English leagues for this. Good luck!
Impossible challenge: I had to think long and hard about this one because I didn't really want to do another one where I set a club that's only just got promoted to win the league, so I couldn't really do one for survivng relegation because this one is quite easy I reckon this would be a medium challenge. So I decided to combine a relegation one with coming high up in the FA Cup. I would say this is the hardest impossible challenge I have set but someone will prove me wrong I would bet on it. So the challenge should you choose to accept is to survive relegation and win the FA Cup with Port Vale or Cheltenham. So the first part would be medium but the second part, well this will be the one to see who is the best a Football Manager.
I was wondering what league to do know, I was going to do a really random one but I thought would many people actually try it and I then thought do one that someone would try. But I decided that I would now do the Welsh league because it is quite random and not known about but people might also try it so the Irish Premier League.
The Carnegie Irish Premier League commonly known as the Irish Premier League, Premier League or IPL is a semi-professional league competition for football clubs located at the top level of the Irish football league system - above the IFA Intermediate League. It was formed in 2003 and took over from the Irish Football League. The Irish Premier League is currently ranked 46th in the UEFA rankings of European leagues, which are based on the performances of member clubs in European competitions. The current champions of Northern Ireland and holders of the IPL title is Linfield.
Teams
Armagh City.
Ballymena United.
Cliftonville Crusaders
Coleraine.
Donegal Celtic.
Dungannon Swifts.
Glenavon
Glentoran Institute
Larne
Limavady United.
Linfield
Lisburn Distillery
Newry City.
Portadown.
- Challenges:
Easy challenge: Win the league with Linfield, Linfield won the league last year and qualified for the Uefa Champions league qualifying stage, this is a challenge for a complete new player to the game and requires little skill.
Medium challenge: Come in the top two with Portadown, last year they finished 4th and were one place out of the Intertoto cup with some good managing and ok signings this challenge will be able to be achieved with some ease.
Hard challenge: Come in the top 3 and qualify for Europe with Larne, last year they finished 14th so this season they will need to progress a lot but it is possible with some good signings and very good managment, I would reccomend getting a good tactic in a freindly and start buying players around that tactic.
Impossible challenge: Same as before this was a hard one to choose but I came up with a very very hard one so here we go, Win the league with Glenavon, last year they only survived relegation by one place so this is well and truly impossible but go on try and prove me wrong.
So many people know what team is for them but do they?
This is my second article ever and in this article I hope to help you discover your perfect club. I have to say some people have made articles like this but this is my version
