Overview:
Well this is my first delve into the eircom League First Division, so Irishmen be gentle on me. From the outside looking in, this team looks fairly solid, for the League they are in. During the 2007 season, they are winning the league, beating Cobh Ramblers by a single point. They have accrued 72 points from 34 matches. The top goalscorer of the league is Conor Gethins from Finn Harps as well.
Expectations:
The media predicts a 3rd place at the end of the season. The expectations of the board and the supporters is promotion from the Irish First Division this season. This does place some pressure on you as the manager, to live up to these expectations. A top two place should be achievable, if you sign one or two good players just to finish off the side. The main problem you will face is the lack of star players that wish to come and play in Ireland.
Goalkeepers:
You start off with two goalkeepers in your squad. Your best goalkeeper is Gavin Cullen, who has some good stats, but nothing special. The biggest plus for him is his Eccentricity(5). At 26 he still has a few good years in him. The other goalkeeper in the squad is 26yo James Gallagher. He isn't bad for this league, just not as good stats wise. If you can find a better keeper, then maybe look at selling Gallagher.
Best Goalkeeper: Gavin Cullen
Defenders:
You have 6 players that can play as defenders in the squad, with one that can play Sweeper as well, if you like playing one. The best of these is 30yo Jonathon Minnock, with Long Throws of 15, Penalty Taking 14 and Tackling of 12. He is the DL that you will need to build your defence around. The best DR you have is 22yo Shaun McGowan. He isn't crash hot at Tackling, but his Long Throws(18), Work Rate(14) and Decisions(14), give him the edge. His backup will be Paddy McLaughlin. Unfortunately, he isn't good. He needs replacing as soon as you can. The leading DL in the squad as stated is Jonathon Minnock , with Positioning of 14. When you first take over, Declan Boyle is Out of Contract. Take the plunge and re-sign him, as he is the best DC you have, with Marking of 12, Tackling of 14 and Heading ability of 17.Your other DC is more best of the rest than an actually good player, and that is Eloka Asokuh, who's only good stat is Tackling(12). The rest should either be sold off, or kept for emergency situations, although I would seriously look at selling them off and trying to buy better starting players, and leave the players I have said as backups.
Best Defender: Jonathon Minnock
Midfielders:
In the MR slot, the best player is Marty McCann, who is also your Assistant Manager. His backup will fall to John O'Loughlin, who is rather ordinary. In the ML position, your best player is Shaun Holmes. The backup for his position will be Declan Divin, who has a couple of good point to keep you interested. The MC slots are a tough choice, as you don't have much to choose from. The first will be the starting Captain Tony Shields, working alongside Michael Funston. On the bench, I think you will get great value out of 21yo Christopher Breen who is an AM RC/FC, that with a bit of training, might become a very handy player. The rest of the midfield forget about, and sell. Try and buy in some quality.
Best Midfielder: Shaun Holmes
Strikers:
In the strike force you have 2 ST, 1 FC and 2 AM that double as front men. Your best ST is actually one of these AM's in 23yo Conor Gethins. At 23yo, and with stats like Finishing and Acceleration of 16 he won't be staying long in this league unless you sign him to a very long contract. I feel that all British clubs will start to look at him closely. Beside him I would play the other AM, in Shane O'Connor. His stats aren't good, but they are the best of the rest. Off the bench I would be running Stephen Parkhouse. Once again try selling off what you don't need to buy some quality..
Best Striker: Conor Gethins
Recommended Sales:
I would try and get rid of all the deadwood in the midfield and up front, hoping to get a couple of quality players instead of having all the bad players.
Recommended Transfers:
You need a second DC. You also need a second quality ST/FC. Midfield is okay, unless you get injuries. In this squad, there is no depth.
