team
overview
The “Pigs” have a fairly solid team for this league, that could go very good, or really crap, depending on the start to the season you get. As you would expect at this level, the team is filled with young players, just starting their careers, mixed with some old heads.
expectations
The media predicts a 6th place at the end of the season. The expectations of the board and the supporters is to finish in a respectable position in the Second Division by the end of the two year plan. This doesn’t place a great deal of pressure on you as the manager, because the team is already fairly solid. With some good loans and some Free Transfers, you can easily accomplish what the board wants.
goalkeepers
You start off with two goalkeepers in your squad. Both of them very young at 16yo. Your best goalkeeper is 16yo Ian Doherty, who is very solid stats wise, for this level. His Eccentricity(15) could be better, but his Aerial Abililty(16), Command of Area and Reflexes(13), as well as Punching(14), more than make up for it. The other goalkeeper in the squad is 16yo Michael Higston. His Handling(15) is better, but overall just falls short of the Number 1 jersey. He is a good backup for this level.
Best Goalkeeper: Ian Doherty
defenders
You only have 5 players that play as defenders in the squad. The best DR you have is 25yo Philip May. His backup will be 24yo Alun Rees. Neither player is great, but should do okay on the outside of the central defenders. The only DL is 30yo Owen Montague. His Marking(10) is good for this level, and his Mental and Physical Attributes are well above average. His backup will be one of the starting MC’s, in 34yo Gavin Arthur. You would really need to buy a player for this position, or Loan, as soon as possible. This would free up Gavin Arthur to stay in the Midfield. Your best DC is 16yo Danny O’Neill, who has good Marking(10) and Tackling(11) stats for this level. He will also improve drastically under a good training program. Your other DC will be 29yo Gary O’Neill. He is not good at all. This is another position, you need someone for straight away. You do not have a bench player to backup the DC’s, so buying in, or Loaning a decent one, will push 29yo Gary O’Neill back to the bench.
Best Defender: Philip May
midfielders
In the MR slot, the best player is 16yo Phillip McKnight. He has better than average stats, and will work hard for the team. His backup will be 23yo Loanee Stephen McDowell. He needs some work, but should be good backup. In the ML position, your best player is 16yo AM L Billy Millen. He will hold his own down the left, and has fairly good Crossing(10) and Finishing(10) ability. His backup will be another 16yo in Robbie Cochrane. He has better Long Throws(11) and Technique(10), but just gets pipped due to Crossing(7). The first MC I would pick, and the first name on the team sheet, would be 34yo Gavin Arthur. He is the teams best player by far, and will set a lot of attacking runs in motion. Playing alongside him, I would go with 16yo Samuel McFadden, who needs some training. They also don’t have a backup. So one will need to be brought into the team.
Best Midfielder: Gavin Arthur
strikers
Up front, you have 3 ST, and 1 AM R/ST. There is no reason to worry about the AM R/ST as he is already utilized as backup for the Midfield. Your best ST is 31yo Graeme Arthur. His stats are great for this level of competition, with Finishing(11), Free Kicks(12) and Composure(8). Beside him I would play 16yo Alan Moffatt. His Finishing(9) isn’t as good, but his Composure(12) is better. Both have good Heading(11) ability. Off the bench I would be promoting both, 23yo Stephen Bainbridge, and the old man of the squad 37yo Colin Young. Their Finishing and Composure is better than the rest of the First Team, and Colin Young’s experience as Assistant Manager, will help your Youngsters. This will also allow Stephen Bainbridge to grow as a player. Don’t expect to hold onto him forever though, as some bigger teams should come knocking.
Best Striker: Graeme Arthur
Recommended Sales
I would look at selling off your other Striker, the 41yo Michael Surgeon.
Recommended Buys
You need a DL, and a DC, right from the start of the game. You also need a backup MC. You may get away with playing Reserve Grade players in the spots for the short term, but it will only end in disaster. After the first season, your Youth Contracted players should have started to show the benefits of the good training, and start to pay back the faith.
Recommended Starting Eleven:
GK - Ian Doherty
DR - Philip May
DL - Owen Montague
DC - Danny O’Neill
DC - Gary O’Neill
MR - Phillip McKnight
ML - Billy Millen
MC - Gavin Arthur
MC - Samuel McFadden
SC - Graeme Arthur
SC - Alan Moffatt
With the purchase, or Loan of some key positions as mentioned, this team has a great foundation to build upon. Some great youngsters, that you should be able to keep at the club for years to come. Good luck in the depths of Northern Ireland.
