Here you can find basic guides to the most basic of details regarding each of the clubs in the Peruvian Primera División Peruana in FM2008. Ranging from transfer budgets, wage budgets, stadium size, board expectations, reputation and much more.
This is the place to find out all the basic info that you need to know about managing in the Peruvian Primera División Peruana before starting a career there in Football Manager 2008.
The Primera División Peruana or Peruvian First Division was founded in 1928 and originally consisted of teams from the Lima and Callao areas of Peru. However, in 1951, the previously amateur league turned professional and allowed clubs from all over the country to enter, and compete for the Primera División Peruana. Since 1997, two half-year tournaments have taken place, which lead to a play-off between each tournament’s winners. These days, 12 sides compete in the Primera División Peruana, which we will look at in more detail later in this guide.

Traditionally, the strongest sides have been from Lima and include Alianza Lima (“The Club of the Poor”), Universitario ("The Club of the Rich"), and from close neighbours Callao, Sport Boys. Since the opening of the league, more nationwide teams began to make their presence felt more and more each year. Cienciano, a club based in Cuzco, South East Peru, have been the only Peruvian side to win international silverware, claiming the Copa Sudamericana in 2003, and the Recopa Sudamericana in 2004, though they are yet to taste domestic glory. I shall now move on to the Football Manager side of the Primera División Peruana, seeing as though it is the reason you are reading this guide…
Alianza Atlético
Alianza Atlético is a Peruvian football club based in the city of Sullana, in the region of Piura. They won promotion into the top flight in 1988, and since have looked to establish themselves amongst the bigger, more well-known sides in the league.

Alianza Atlético are one of the poorer sides you will come across in Peru, one for those who like a challenge. Although they have a few decent players, they are a side that will look to be fighting the drop rather than fighting for the championship. As manager, nothing special is expected of you, a safe mid-table finish is the minimum required by the board. In Jorge Rivera you have a solid ‘keeper to keep out the goals, and you have a pretty solid defence in front of him, with Frank Rojas being the pick of these. In the midfield, things start to look good, the tireless work of Marco Casas, allows the wingers Carlos García and Javier Soria to bomb forward, without having to worry about covering the back four. In Pedro Ascoy, you have a striker who is guaranteed goals, and should look convert most of the chances created by your team. A nice little budget of £675k should allow you to strengthen your team, should you see fit.
Alianza Lima
Alianza Lima was one of the founder clubs of the Primer División Peruana, when it started in 1928. Since the league turned professional in 1951, they have been the second most successful side in Peru, winning no less than twenty-two league titles, only two short of the record held by Universitario. They are the second most popular side in their nation, again behind Universitario.

If you want a side to walk into and mount a title challenge straight away, this is the team to be. They posses a really strong squad, which has the advantage of strength in depth, too. Again, the spine of the side is strong, starting with Joel Pinto. Club favourite Ernesto Arakaki is probably the best defender at the club, and is much needed experience at the heart of defence, not one to go missing in big games. Another club favourite, Juan Jayo provides quality defensive cover, allowing the creative duo of Marko Ciurlizza and Carlos Zeggara to bomb forward and create chances. Loan star Junior Ross & veteran Flavio Maestri will bag the goals to ensure your team presses for the title. Keep an eye out for young Paraguayan striker Juan Ignacio Acosta Cabrera, as he has the potential to become a quality player for the club. A nice budget of £1.43m should aid the cause, and ensure you have the money to strengthen such a great squad.
Arequipa Total
Arequipa total is a club which was originally formed by Laundry company owner Felix Enciso. The squad was originally made up of employee’s and management of the laundry company, but after they became a more competitive force, the owner started scouting the Arequipean leagues for more competitive players, this reaped its reward, with the team now playing in the Peruvian top flight.

Probably the worst side you’ll come across in Peru, one for the manager who likes a challenge. Players are needed, badly and a budget of £375k doesn’t help the cause. Fortunately, experienced ‘keeper Gustavo Roverano is what you need at a struggling club – experience, and with good attributes too, certainly one to rely on. Cienciano loanee Sandro Gamarra also brings plenty of experience to the side and a solid centre half, too. Left winger César Ortiz is one to keep hold of, he could turn out to be the difference between survival and relegation, probably the best player at your disposal. José Pena is another one who could be the key man in your survival campaign, one sure to bag the goals.
Bolognesi
Bolognesi is a club named after Peruvian military hero Francisco Bolognesi, and was formed in 1929. They are based in Tacna, and have won the Copa Perú on two occasions, the first coming in 1976, and the most recent, not so long ago in 2001. They currently play their home games at the 20000 all-seater stadium Jorge Basadra.

Another side tipped to struggle, Bolognesi should avoid relegation pretty easily though. Experienced striker Paul Cominges should aid the cause with much needed goals, with fellow striker José Carlos Ferenández also chipping in with vital goals. Creative wingers Luis Ramírez and Luis Hernández should lay on plenty of chances for the two strikers to score, as Miguel Ostersen should hold the midfield stable. Right back Eduardo Uribe and centre half Jesús Alvarez make up half of a pretty solid back line, providing cover for young and talented goalkeeper Diego Penny. With a budget of £850k, a decent centre half could be signed to sure up the back line to make sure relegation is avoided easily.
Cienciano
Originally founded by a group of students, Cienciano has gradually developed into a dominant force in Peruvian football, despite never actually winning domestic honours. Despite the lack of success at home, they have won the biggest tournament in South America, the Copa Sudamericana in 2003, and followed this up by a penalty shoot-out victory over Boca Juniors in the Recopa Sudamericana in 2004. The closest they have come to domestic glory has been runner-up on three occasions, in 2001, 2005 and 2006.

One of the teams tipped to challenge for the title. With the right signings made from the generous budget of £1.8m, this could easily be achieved. The starting squad is a very strong squad, with the likes of pacey striker William Chiroque, who has the ability to cause havoc in any defence in the league with his sheer pace. Partnered with target man Jaime Ruíz, it could prove to be a title winning combination. Midfield is your strongest area, and central midfield pairing Juan Carlos Bazalar and César Ccahuantico should provide the right balance of defence and attack, combining with wingers José Pereda and Ricardo Pérez. This midfield four should chip in with a fair amount of girls and assists between them. The backline is in desperate need of investment, with a left back and centre half needed, although Guillermo Guizasola and Carlos Solís are very solid. Goalkeeper Juan Flores rounds off an impressive Cienciano side.
Deportivo Municipal
Club Centro Deportivo Municipal is traditionally considered as one of the most popular teams in Peru. It won the Segunda Division during the 2006, and now plays in the Primera Division. Although relegated to the second tier of Peruvian football in 2000, Municipal are still a successful team, having won the Premier Division 4 times, in 1938, 1940, 1943 & 1950, and have finished runner-up on 8 occasions, these were in 1941, 1942, 1944, 1945, 1946, 1947, 1951 & 1981.

In Deportivo Municipal, you have a side tipped to struggle, but not as much as others around them. A prediction of 7th is easily achievable, with the squad at your disposal. A vital mix of youth and experience runs right through the team, which is always good. At one end of the field you have experience goalkeeper Homar Reynoso who provides excellent shop stopping ability, and leaking goals shouldn’t really be a problem. Meanwhile at the opposing end of the field, you have José Sosa, a highly rated youngster who will score goals for fun at almost any level; you should hang on to him at all costs. In the middle of the park, you have Japanese midfielder Masakatsu Sawa, who is more than capable of scoring as well as providing plenty of goals. With your tight budget of £838k, a few defensive investments should be made, with only Paulo Ramos capable of living up to expectations.
Melgar
Melgar is one of the oldest clubs in Peru, being founded in 1915. It originally participated in the Peruvian football league, which consisted of teams from the Lima district. It was one of the first entrants in the national football league, when invited in 1966. In its history, Melgar has won the Peruvian top flight once, as well as being runner up on one occasion, too. They have also won the Copa Perú, which came in 1971.

Melgar are tipped to finish just outside the top four, but as Manager, you could aim to break into the top 4, as it is a realistic aim. Uruguayan stopper Jorge Rodríguez is a class act between the sticks, and is a vital asset to your side. Giuliano Portilla is a solid left back who sures up the back line, along with centre half Rivelino Carassa. The creative spark in midfield comes from club legend Christian Zúniga, with winger Walter Zeballos also bombing forward. Other club legend Ysrael Zúniga should provide the goals needed to challenge for the top four spot. Should you want to spend the budget of £603k, a striker and centre half are desperately needed.

A season of struggle is ahead of you if you take charge of Sport Ancash. Survival is the task, but, with the squad you have, it looks highly unlikely. A weak back four is backed up by a week goalkeeper, and these should be the priority should you decide to spend your £300k budget. The midfield, however, is a little stronger; with Juan Montenegro the best midfielder at in your control, and you should look to play him whenever possible. Another key player for the survival bid is striker Rafael Villanueva, who could score vital goals throughout the season.
Sport Boys
On the 28th of July a group of young enthusiasts from the city Callao got together to fulfil the dream of Gualberto Lizárraga, form a football club. The result; Sport Boys. One of the most successful teams in Peru having won the league title 6 times, and coming runner-up 9 times.

A safe mid-table finish is what is expected of you as manager of Sport Boys. This should be achieved with ease, with some of the quality at your disposal. The quality starts all the way back between the posts, in ‘keeper Oscar Ibanez, such a quality ‘keeper should be held on to at all costs, despite his advancing years. Jorge Araujo is another player you should look to keep hold of, as he performs key defensive duties for the Sport Boys first team. Columbian starlet Johnnier Montano is a quality player, despite such a young age, and should be played in the heart of midfield whenever possible, as he will provide plenty of goals and assists. Another Colombian, Rodrigo Saráz is the best striker you have, and again, should be played whenever possible, as he will net plenty of goals.
Sporting Cristal
Originally named Sporting Tobacco, Sporting Cristal was renamed when the Tobacco Company was bought out by a Beer Company, which brought on the name Sporting Cristal. They have won 15 league titles, a number which is only beaten by two other sides. In 1997, it became only the second Peruvian club to reach the Copa Libertadores final.

The easiest side to play as in the Peruvian top flight and the board expect nothing less than the title from you, and you certainly have the squad and resources to do this. A helpful budget of £701k will allow you to add to your near-perfect squad where you see fit, which should only make the challenge for the title easier. Edinson Chará, a pacey striker, could be the man to win you the league with his goals, every defence in the league will be worried by his raw pace. Club legend Roberto Palacios provides support for the strikers in his box-to-box role in the heart of the midfield, a player that must be played when available. Peruvian international defender Miguel Villalta provides excellent service in the heart of the defence, along with fellow centre-half Ramiro Fassi. Goalkeeper Erick Delgado is a class act despite his tender age, definitely one to keep hold of for the future.
Universitario
Universitario are a traditional Peruvian football club based in the capital, Lima. They were founded as Federación Universitaria in 1924 by professors and students from the National University of San Marcos but were forced to re-name themselves in 1931. They are the most successful club in Peru, winning 24 league titles, and finishing runner-up 14 times, they also reached the final of the Copa Libertadores in 1972.

Universitario, probably the best established club in Peru, and the one with the most expectant fans, too. To meat the demands of the fans need for a league title, which was last won by Universitario back in 2000, the board provide you with a transfer kitty of £1.21m, to spend as you please. Johan Faro, a striker capped Peru on two occasions, is easily the best striker in the squad, and a player you should be expecting to score over twenty goals a season. Faro has the players to provide him with chances, with one particular man being experienced Colombian international midfielder Héctor Hurtado, who is the best midfielder at the club. Onto the defence, and a rock at the back is Carlos Galván, who is one of the, if not the best central defenders in the league. Galván and his fellow defenders provide excellent cover for inexperienced Peruvian stopper José Carvallo, who has just broken into the first team, a product of the youth system at Universitario.
USMP
Founded in 2004, they were promoted to the Peruvian Premier League in their first season as a club, after finishing top of the Second Division. The beginning of the 2007 season smiled upon the "Santos". They won the Apertura for the first time after defeating Cienciano 2-1 in Cuzco, qualifying for the Copa Libertadores 2008.

A relatively new club to the top flight of Peruvian football, and this is taken into account with the media prediction of 10th, which is not too demanding. A fairly good squad is backed up by a £1m transfer budget, which allows you to spend on players you think will strengthen your chance of survival. Target man Roberto Silva is about the best player at the club, and should cause havoc from set pieces, and can come in handy when you put the long-ball tactic into action. Midfielder John Hinostroza likes to get up and down, and if allowed a free role, he will bag goals, as well as provide them and also get back and carry out defensive duties if needed. Leo Butrón, the goalkeeper, needs to be tied down to long term contract as soon as possible, assuming he will sign the deal, as he is the best shot stopper at the club, by a long way. Jorge Huamán has everything you look for in a full back, the willingness to get up and down the touchline all game, providing the overlap for wingers and delivering deadly crosses into the box for the strikers to convert, as well as getting back and defending well. Centre half Jorge Reyes is the best at the club, and will be vital to your team as you look to establish yourself in the Peruvian Premier League.

Left winger César Ortiz is one to keep hold of, he could turn out to be the difference between survival and relegation, probably the best player at your disposal. José Pena is another one who could be the key man in your survival campaign, one sure to bag the goals.

Sport Ancash is a Peruvian football club which is based in the city of Huaraz. Although not considered a big club by many, they have tasted success on one occasion, which came in the form of the Copa Perú in 2004.
