Are you looking for hints and tips on the best tactical player instructions to set for your players in your Football Manager 2008 Tactics? If so then this collection of FM2008 Hints and Tips on player instructions for FM08 should help you out.
Following positive feedback from my first guide on team talk's, I've decided to have a go at one for individual player instructions. Here Goes...
Based on 4-4-2 Tactic
Goalkeeper
I find that leaving the goalkeeper instructions on the default settings works fine, however, you may want to change the distribution depending on your teams style of play. If you play possession football, then 'short' would be the best one to go for, or choose to distribute to a cetain player. Preferably a defender.
Full Back's
Mentallity: 1-3 clicks to the left of the mentality bar. This will ensure your full backs do not get caught out of position.
Creative Freedom: 1 click to the left of center. This is linked to the mentality bar. If you set it too high, the full back will roam forward a lot more, and get caught out of position.
Passing Style:[/i] Direct. This will make sure that the player does not hold onto the ball too long in difficult situations. He will look to play a direct pass to a forward player, whilst he is being closed down. Ideal if your team plays a counter-attack style.
Closing Down: Three Clicks right of center. If the player has the chance to close down the opposing player, he will.
Marking: Zonal. If you set man marking to a full back, he may make space for other opposing players.
Forward Runs: Often.
Center Back's:
Mentality: Defensive. The defender will not get caught out by a pacey opposition striker if you have the mentality set to 'defensive.' If the defender is pacey, then you could set his mentality a little higher.
Creative Freedom: Little. Your center-back's must be reliable and stick to the game plan. He cannot afford to be too creative. Will result in him being caught out of position and giving the ball away in dangerous areas.
Passing Style: Direct. Your center back's will get closed down by opposing players regularly through-out the match. He must not hold onto the ball for too long.
Closing Down: I usually have closing down set 2 clicks to left of center for one CB, and 1 click right of center for the other CB. This means you always have one CB behind the closing down CB, so you do not leave a lot of space in your back line.
Marking: I go for man marking with my CB's. It limits the oppositions shots on goal.
Wingers:
Mentality: Three Clicks right of center. Your wingers need the chance to get forward, and having a fairly attacking mentality will help their cause. You may wish to reduce the mentality when playing against tricky opponents, e.g, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Creadtive Freedom: One or two click's right of center. This will make sure the winger is effective in creating chances. It also gives him the freedom to make more creative decisions. (A high decisions atrribute would be a bonus here).
Passing Style: Two - three clicks right of center. A winger is likely to get closed down by opposing players, so short passing should not be used here, whatever style of play you use.
Closing Down: Three clicks right of center. Any more, and he may leave his full back open and vulnerable.
Marking: I usually leave marking for wingers.
Forward Runs: Often.
Defensive Midfielder's:
Mentality: Defensive. The same level as your CB's. This will make sure he does not roam too far forward.
Creative Freedom: Little. You need your DM to be the hearbeat of your side. Nothing fancy, he just gets the ball, and gives it.
Passing Style: One click right of center. The DM is usually deeper in your half than other attacking players, so you can afford to give him a little more time on the ball.
Closing Down: Two clicks right of center. To be able to get the ball and give it, he needs to be a in a decent position to tackle an opponent.
Marking: Zonal. If your DM is a 'destroyer' he will boss that area of the field with ease.
Forward Runs: Rarely. The DM must stay in position all match, and not leave space behind the midfield, and in front of the defence.
Attacking Midfielders:
Mentality Four - five clicks right of center. The AM needs the freedom to get forward to contribute vital goals to your teams cause.
Creative Freedom: Much. An AM can provide lots of assists for your front ment via through balls. A lot of creative freedom can help him do this.
Passing Style: Two clicks right of center. Your AM is likely to be in the thick of the actions and holding onto the ball could cause him to frequently lose possesion.
Closing Down: Four clicks right of center. It is essential to close-down opposition players in the midfield-battle-zone.
Forward Runs: Often. He must be given the freedom to get forward whenever possible. A high 'off the ball' and 'decisions' attribute is an advantage here.
Strikers:
Mentality I have one striker's mentality as far as you can go right of center, and one 3 clicks below him. The will ensure one striker drops off a little, and can provide a vital link between midfield and the final third.
Creative Freedom Half-way between center and the right hand side of the bar. This will make sure your front-men aren't shy in creating chances for other players.
Passing Style: Same as AM. Your strikers cannot afford to hold onto the ball. They need to be able to make quick decisions when on the ball, as he will not get much time on it.
Closing Down: Often. This will make sure he closes down the oppositions defenders. They cannot distribute the ball freely to their midfield if he is being closed down and is put under pressure.
Note: I have decided not to use the 'rule of two' as, in my experiences, it hasn't worked.
Thank's for reading, and any comments are appreciated.
