Love your copy of Football Manager

Spending Valentine’s Day alone is a lonely thought. It’s the one day of the year where love is celebrated everywhere, people are entwined with their loved ones or perhaps chasing the one they are head over heels with.
If the above applies to you, surely you can take this time to think of one poor soul who will be alone on Valentine’s Day. Your loving copy of FM will probably take a backseat to your significant other, breaking its shiny little circular heart.
Who will lead your Blue Square South side to the play-offs? Your assistant will be there but, for FM, there is nobody quite like you. FM has your heart for the majority of the year but you cruelly discard it on those “special occasions” of the year, like birthdays, Christmas Day, anniversaries and the like.
Tell me this, dear reader, when was the last time you treated your FM to an anniversary or birthday treat? Did you even think to get FM a little gift for Christmas? No. Not once. All the joy, love and affection you get from FM and you discard it like some sort of… game or something. I bet you wouldn’t forget to buy your significant other a Christmas present but it’s alright, FM forgives and forgets. It’s just happy to see your smiling face every time you put FM in your CD drive and open this love-giving application. It goes through all the agonies and ecstasies with you. Was it your wife who consoled you when you fought bravely against relegation but went down on the last day? It wasn’t your girlfriend who gleefully celebrated with you when you conquered Europe with Albacete, was it?
So when you are in the throes of passion with your significant other on February 14th, just think of your lonely FM… resigned to its case on a dusty shelf, forgotten…“So when you are in the throes of pass other on February 14th, just think of your lonely FM… resigned to its case on a dusty shelf, forgotten…”
On the other hand, you could neglect the significant other and elect to spend this most symbolic of days with your lifelong companion, FM. Women will come and go; FM is something that will stay with you.
Its warm nature will always be there when you open the case, shining back at you, perfectly radiant. The scent of the box filling your senses up with unbridled joy, the buoyant whirr of the CD drive as you pop that little disc of happiness in, the sense of righteousness and pride you get when you boot up your favourite save game… you just don’t get that with a woman.
Put it this way, when your partner asks you if you remember that walk along the promenade you both took last summer, do you remember? Truthfully, could you say you remember the day when you went to the funfair, went on the Ferris wheel and got candy floss stuck to your faces? On the other hand, how could you ever forget the sense of achievement you had when you finally signed a 38 year old David Beckham for Raufoss of Norway? What about that time you took over Deportivo La Coruna and won the Copa Del Rey with them? The wife will remember enough sentimental times for the both of you; FM memories are straight from the heart.
The late nights spent up with FM while your girlfriend sleeps quietly in the next room, FM won’t tell anyone… That one day you skipped your mother-in-law’s funeral to lead Basingstoke Town into the Football League; FM remains silent… That fateful night you spent crying in the bathroom after you defeated your favourite club to send them down; FM has its lips sealed. It knows you so well that it knows it’s best to say nothing at all. What would your girlfriend say to you crying in the bathroom? “It’s only a game”… and therein lies the crucial difference. FM would never utter such cruel words to you and deep down, never could.
This Valentine’s Day, show the one you love how much you care for them. Whether you put its case to the top of your gaming pile, give it a little clean or even just give it a bit of attention for a while, FM will know you care.
