Newcastle relegated - AI Experiment

Average Rating: 8/10 Hits: 1203 Submitted: Apr 7, 2008

With Newcastle flirting with relegation from the Premier League of late, I was wondering what it would be like if they experienced a Leeds-style collapse, both financially and on the pitch. So, I meddled around in the FM Data Editor, and looked to take a backseat as Newcastle tried to adjust to life in the Coca-Cola Championship.

The changes I have made are quite big ones. The club’s funding has been removed – Mike Ashley left the club following relegation, thus ending any future income and dropping the transfer budget to £0. In an effort to really make the club suffer financially, the club are a hundred and ninety million pounds in the red. Professor John McKenzie has experience of monetary ruin with Leeds, and will be in charge should the club enter administration too.

Also, I have released some staff. Manager Kevin Keegan has been sacked, with the Magpies legend failing to perform in the Premier League. Joining him at the job centre are Steve Round, Joe Joyce and Adrian Lamb, all coaches. Scouts Jeff Vetere, Jack Chapman, Paul Montgomery and Bobby Saxton have all been dismissed, and executive director Dennis Wise has left.

Due to the drop in division, reputation has been reduced to 6000. It’s still the highest in the Championship, so the board will expect success on a shoestring budget. I have deliberately left the players alone so I can see how the club deals with them. Whether they will take wage cuts, become free agents or get transfer listed, a mass exodus is likely at St. James’ Park.

I am not actually going to be in charge of the Toon; I will be watching from the sidelines as the club look to return to the promised land. I’ll report on any sales, and whether administration is set to loom for the former giants.
